One of India’s oldest forms of meditation is called vipassana. It is the essence of what Gautama the Buddha practiced and taught during his forty-five year ministry. It was rediscovered by him 2500 years ago. By engaging in Vipassana meditation during the Buddha’s lifetime, a great deal of people in northern India were liberated from the grip of suffering, enabling them to excel in all facets of life. The method then expanded to nearby Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Thailand, and other nations, where it had the same edifying impact.
Five centuries after the Buddha, India has lost her illustrious Vipassana tradition. Other places too lost the teaching’s purity. But a group of determined instructors in Myanmar managed to keep it alive. Over the course of two thousand years, this devoted dynasty passed down the skill in all of its unadulterated purity. Prior to his time, Venerable Ledi Sayadaw only made Vipassana meditation available to monks. He later made it available to laypeople as well. He instructed a layperson named Saya Thetgyi, who then instructed Sayagyi U Ba Khin.
A continuous line of instructors has transmitted Vipassana from the time of the Buddha to the present. The present instructor in this chain, Mr. S. N. Goenka, is of Indian ancestry but was born and reared in Burma (Myanmar). He had the good fortune to study Vipassana while he was there from his instructor, Sayagyi U Ba Khin, who was at the time a senior government official. After fourteen years of instruction from his mentor, Mr. Goenka moved to India and started imparting his knowledge of Vipassana in 1969.
Nowadays, more and more people are practicing Vipassana in their day to day life. It has also shown a great improvement in their health even after the pandemic ended.
