What Does an Auto Locksmith Do?
Have you ever gotten locked out of your car but had someone with access to a spare key come to your rescue? It’s a relief to have a backup key and someone to bring it to you. But who do you call when you don’t have a backup key, or no one to bring you the spare keys? That’s when an auto locksmith is your hero and comes to the rescue when called.
What is an Auto Locksmith?
Just like a residential or commercial locksmith, an auto locksmith works on locks, but they work on car locks rather than homes or commercial building locks. You’d think that all locks are the same right? You’d be wrong, at least mostly wrong.
What does an Auto Locksmith Do?
Auto locksmiths come to the call whenever someone locks themselves out of their car, while the keys are sitting on the seat. We’ve all done it at some point, and we’ve all felt the pang of panic that hits as you realize what’s happened. This is why we have automovite locksmiths!
Auto locksmiths now do more than just unlock cars. With cars becoming more advanced, so are the locksmiths and their services.
Unlock Vehicles
This is the primary service any auto locksmith provides- letting us back into our cars after we lock ourselves out accidentally. For cars that use keyless entry, the locksmith can temporarily recode the locks to let you back into your car. For older cars that still have physical keys, the good ole slim jim comes into play like in the movies.
Remove broken Keys
Sometimes a key snaps in the door lock, or even in the ignition. While rare in both areas, it can happen and has enough to warrant special tools and skills in order to remove broken keys. It’s best to leave this to the pros with the right tools rather than risk damaging the ignition even further, and having much more expensive repairs needed.
Reprogram Keys
Most cars have keyfobs and utilize keyless entry and ignition. Sometimes those keyfobs get scrambled when in contact with strong magnets or machinery that makes them go haywire. Auto locksmiths have the equipment to reprogram your keyfob, so it works again.
Repair Car locks
Car locks can get damaged in a number of ways, but an auto locksmith can repair the locks just as easily as a dealership can, and usually for much less.
Replace or Repair Ignitions
Just like door or trunk locks, the ignition can get worn down with time and needs repairs or replacing. Locksmiths can easily repair or completely replace the ignition in your vehicle- and for a much more reasonable price than the dealership!
Replace or Duplicate Keys
For cars that still use a typical key, replacing and duplicating them is the same process as with a house key. If the key is attached to a fob, then there may be a chip inside that is coded to the ignition of that specific vehicle, and that takes a bit more to replace and duplicate.
