Uses of CBD Oil in Modern Life
Uses of CBD in one of the most discussed topic theses days. Cannabidiol or CBD is a cannabinoid. Cannabinoids affect the body’s eocrinoid system to regulate mood, anxiety, and appetite. CBD in hemp plants (Cannabis ruderalis), is usually higher. CBD is then added to carrier oil to make CBD Oil. The other main component of Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa species–but not typically Cannabis ruderalis–is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
THC may cause euphoria and other sensations like paranoia. CBD oil should never contain more than 0.3% of THC. Because CBD oil is not thought to cause euphoria in most cases, many people mistakenly assume that CBD oil is safe. Consumers and researchers are both interested to know more about CBD products. One source suggests that CBD products may be worth over $20 billion in the US.
Uses of CBD Oils
Supplement use must be personalized and vetted in advance by a healthcare professional (e.g., a registered nurse, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider). No supplement is intended for the treatment, cure, prevention, or mitigation of disease. CBD oil promotes health benefits for people suffering from a range of conditions. CBD oil has been popularized by researchers. But, so far, little research has been done on humans.9 It is unclear if there are any health benefits.
Here’s a deeper dive on CBD oil and its more compelling health benefits.
Seizures
The FDA approved Epidiolex as a CBD-infused oral solution in June 2018. Epidiolex is used in the treatment of two rare forms, Dravet Syndrome and Lennox–Gastaut Syndrome, for epilepsy in children aged under 2 years. These rare genetic disorders are responsible for lifelong seizures starting in the first year. It was also approved in 2020 to treat tuberous sclerosis compound, a rare genetic disorder that causes benign tumours to grow throughout the body.
This condition is often accompanied with seizures. Epidiolex is approved to be used by individuals one-year old and over for each of the three conditions. CBD’s effectiveness for treating seizures aside from these conditions is unknown. Epidiolex is not able to determine if CBD has anti-seizure properties. Epidiolex cannot be considered a supplement. It must be prescribed by a healthcare professional. CBD products, by contrast, aren’t regulated or standardized. CBD products have so far not been proven effective in treating seizures.
Anxiety
CBD might be helpful in treating anxiety disorders.13 However, not enough trials have been done to test CBD’s effects on anxiety. In one study, 57 participants took CBD oil (or a sugar pill with zero CBD) before attending a public-speaking event.14 Researchers assessed their anxiety levels using heart rate and blood pressure measures. The Visual Analog Mood Scale is a reliable mood test that can be used by researchers. The men who took 300mg of CBD oil experienced less anxiety than those who received a placebo.
However the effects of CBD oil on anxiety were not the same for those who took 100mg or 600mg of CBD oil. Due to the small sample size and limited enrollment of men, this trial did not include enough data to assess whether CBD oil had an equal impact on women. Another double-blind placebo controlled study found that CBD also reduced symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder in adolescents.15 Only 37 people were involved in this study.
Addiction
Preliminary tests on CBD’s effects in addiction have produced mixed results. A small, randomized controlled trial with fifty people suffering from heroin addiction revealed benefits of CBD at 400 and 800-mg doses.17 CBD was given to the patients as a placebo. This resulted in less anxiety and decreased cravings. CBD oil’s safety and effectiveness for this use will require more rigorous testing.
Schizophrenia
1000 mg of CBD oil was found to decrease positive psychotic symptoms like hallucinations or delusions in a random controlled trial of 88 people taking medication for schizophrenia.18 However CBD oil and placebo had no significant difference in terms of negative psychotic effects (like blunt effect or disinterest). It is important to note that CBD oil in this study was not used as a treatment for schizophrenia. It is important to note that THC products can increase symptoms such as paranoia, schizophrenia, and psychosis.
