Mosque of Makkah
In Islam, Muslims in good physical condition must perform Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam and the major pilgrimage that must be performed once in a lifetime. In contrast, Umrah, a smaller pilgrimage that follows Hajj, can be performed as often as one wishes. Both pilgrimages take place at the Haram Mosque. Hajj is performed only during the month of Zil-Hijjah, while Umrah can perform throughout the year except during the month of Zil-Hijjah.
Islam has given us the gift of living every moment of every day. The more we follow the beautiful hadiths of the Prophet (SAW) in all areas – social, familial, interpersonal, professional, religious, and even political – the more productive and effective our lives will be.
Masjid al-Haram
The purpose of these pilgrimages is to bring together all Muslims from around the world, uniting them and promoting harmony, brotherhood, and friendship. The Great Mosque of Makkah is also known as Masjid al-Haram, Masjid al-Sharif and Masjid al-Haram. Consider the holiest of all world mosques and an important pilgrimage place.
The mosque has an area of 356,800 square meters and can accommodate 820,000 visitors during the Hajj. It is the only mosque that does not have a pilgrimage orientation. Since Makkah is the holiest site, which includes the Great Mosque of Makkah, the Kaaba, and many other buildings, Muslims perform spiritual rituals here during the Umrah trip.
Buildings in and around the Great Mosque of Makkah
All the buildings in and around the Great Mosque of Makkah are associated with the Prophet Abraham and are part of the sacred pilgrimage. Here is a brief description of them.
Khana Kaaba
The Kaaba is the rectangular structure at the center of the Makkah Mosque and is the central point where Muslims perform their worship and pilgrimage. Consider the holiest site, and all Muslims hope to see it at least once in their lifetime.
Black Stone
The Black Stone is a celestial stone that, according to the hadiths, is said to have fallen from the sky on a nearby hill and is the only remnant of the original structure built by the Prophet Abraham. This black stone also plays an important role in sacred pilgrimage rituals.
Zamzam Well
When the Prophet Ismail and his mother Hajrah could not find water in the desert between Safa and Marwa, Allah Almighty miraculously revealed this holy water called Zamzam.
Safa Marwa
Safa and Marwa are the two mountains between which Hagar ran in search of water for her child, Ishmael. It is an event celebrated by a poetry ceremony during the pilgrimage.
Abraham’s station
The Maqam of Abraham is a stone that contains the Prophet Abraham’s footprints and is preserved in a crystal dome next to the Kaaba. According to the Qur’an, the Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail laid the foundations of the house, later identified by commentators as the Kaaba. Allah Almighty showed Ibrahim the exact location right at the well of Zamzam. When the Kaaba build, an angel brought the black stone from heaven to Prophet Ibrahim.
Humanity to Unite Muslims
Ibrahim placed this stone in the eastern corner of the Kaaba. Then revealed to Ibrahim that Allah Almighty had ordered him to announce. The Hajj for humanity unites Muslims from all over the world and promotes brotherhood and harmony. Thus, making the Great Mosque of Makkah the holiest place.
Grand Mosque of Makkah
The Grand Mosque of Makkah has undergone regular renovations and is now the most elegant place to see. The beauty of every building in and around the mosque is truly impressive. And a Muslim can never get enough of it. This holy place is a source of repentance and seeking Allah’s (SWT) forgiveness for our nation’s sins.
