A person’s skin color is usually determined by their photo type and exposure to sunlight. Often areas exposed to the sun are darker than areas covered. This color depends on skin cells called melanocytes, which are unique in that they produce a pigment called melanin. Treatment of pigmentation at home
Many of the remedies we share here are anecdotal, some research suggests that their key ingredients work on skin tone.
1. Apple cider vinegar
These compounds can also be beneficial for the skin. Anecdotal evidence suggests that ACV may be beneficial in the management of pigmentation and other skin problems.
How to apply : Mix one tablespoon each of apple cider vinegar and water in a bowl (take equal parts of both depending on the area to be treated). Dip a cotton swab in this mixture and apply it on the affected area. Leave it until it dries completely. Wash it off with warm water. Repeat this twice a week.
2. Aloe vera
Aloe vera contains an active ingredient called alvein, which has skin-lightening properties (2). How to apply : Take 3 tablespoons of aloe vera gel and 2 teaspoon of honey in a bowl. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes after mixing it and then apply it on the area where the pigmentation is and let it dry. Wash it off with warm water.
3. Orchid extracts
Applying an orchid-rich extract to the skin for eight weeks improved the size and appearance of dark spots. You can use skin products containing orchid extract, including masks, creams and scrubs. Use as directed for best results.
4. Red onion
Red onion (Allium cepa) extract is an ingredient in some commercially available skin and scar lightening creams. Research has found that dried red onion effectively lightens the skin. Look for creams that contain Allium cepa for hyperpigmentation and use as directed.
5. Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain lycopene, which can reduce the long-term effects of photo damage. Since spots and discoloration are also long-term results of photo damage, tomatoes can help lighten them. Let it dry. Wash it off with normal water.
6. Sandalwood to purifying the blood.
Sandalwood purifies the blood and also acts as a skin tonic. It also provides protection from sunlight and UV rays. Mix equal amounts of sandalwood powder and rose water to make a smooth paste. Apply on the affected areas and wash off after 30 minutes to get soft and youthful skin.
7. Green Tea
Tyrosinase is an enzyme usually find in your body that is responsible of pigmentation. Green tea extracts have been found to inhibit mushroom tyrosinase (in vitro), which may have a depigmentation effect. How to use: Steep a green tea bag in a cup of warm water and wait for it to cool. Rub the tea bag on the patches area. Repeat this treatment thrice a day.
Prevention From Pigmentation
Protect yourself from the sun to prevent pigmentation marks from appearing or worsening. Avoid the sun when its rays are most dangerous. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Wearing hats or clothing that blocks sunlight. Increase your intake of foods rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Vegetables like spinach, carrots, lettuce, broccoli, red bell pepper, sweet potato help reduce and prevent pigmentation. Increase your intake of citrus fruits, vitamin C helps reduce damage from harmful UV rays, reduce dark spots and maintain healthy skin.
