STORY OF SIXTEEN MONDAYS

Once Shankar (Hindu God) and Parvati (Hindu Goddess) sat playing chopat (Indoor Game of India) in their temple. Who will judge who won and lost in this game…? Shankar-Parvati started thinking about it. At that time, Tapodhana Brahmin, the priest of this temple, came there and Shankar-Parvati entrusted him with the task of judging.

Shankar won and at the end of a bet, he asked the Brahmin, “Who lost…? Who won…?”

“Lord…! you won and Parvati lost,” Brahmin said. Parvati won the second game and She asked the Brahmin, “Who lost…? Who won…?” My Lord won and you lost – Brahmin said.

Parvati also won the third game. And when she asked Brahmin, he again lied because he wanted to please Shankar. This angered Parvati and she cursed the Brahmin.

Hey…! Brahmin…! Out of three games, I won two games still you lied. I curse you that “Leprosy will break out all over your body”. Due to Parvati’s curse, the Brahmin immediately developed leprosy all over his body. Shankar-Parvati became engrossed.

Tapodhan Brahmin walked away from there crying. On the way, he met a Mahatma. When he asked the Brahmin why he was crying, he told all the facts and asked him to show some way out of this. The Mahatma told him to do penance to Shankar with all his heart. Brahmin decided to go to Kailas in the Himalayas to do the penance of Shankar. On the way, he met a brown horse. The horse was very sad. The Brahmin went to him and patted his back, so the horse said, “Brother, why are you crying…? And where are you going…?” The Brahmin said, “I have been cursed by Parvati and I am going to solve it.”

The horse said, “Brother come and do a work for me, I am so beautiful and huge, yet no one rides on me, you come and ask for the redress of my sin.” ‘Good’ Brahmin said and walked forward. Going further, the Brahmin found a cow in the way. The cow stopped Brahmin and asked him the reason behind his cry.

Brahmin told all the details to the cow, so the cow said, “Brother…! I am also suffering. My udders burst with milk. So no one feeds me nor do my calves chase me. Please you come asking for the redress of my sin.”

“Good,” Brahmin said and moved forward.

Going a little further, the Brahmin saw a huge mango tree on the road. The Tree was topped with mangoes. The Brahmin sat under a mango tree to relax. Then suddenly Tree started speaking and he said to the Brahmin: “Brother! I know your pain but listen to my pain. On my tree grows delicious mangoes, but no one tastes my fruit, and if anyone does, he dies immediately. You come asking for the redress of my sin.”

“Good,” Brahmin said and moved forward.

Further along, the road came a lake. Brahmin went down to the lake to drink water, a crocodile came up there and asked the Brahmin the same question. Brahmin also gave him the same answer. Then the crocodile said: “Brother! I live in this tepid water, yet my whole body is inflamed. You come asking for forgiveness of my sin.”

“Good,” Brahmin said and moved forward.

He came to Mount Kailas in the Himalayas and sat under a tree to do penance. He did very hard penance. Shankar was pleased with this and gave an appearance to the Brahmin and asked for a boon. Brahmin said: “Lord! Save me from the curse of Parvati and cure my leprosy.”

“Hey…! Brahmin, If you do a fast for sixteen Mondays with a true heart, then your leprosy will be cured, and you will be saved from Parvati’s curse.” – Shankar said.

How should I perform this fast?” – Brahmin asked.

Shankar said: “Hey Bhudev! This fast starts on the first Monday of the Shravan month and is performed on sixteen Mondays. On the previous day of the month of Shravana, i.e. on the day of Diwasa, gather four threads of yellow thread and wear the thread with four knots at a distance between them around the neck. Every Monday morning, get up early, take a bath, and go to the temple of Mahadevji and worship him. Do fast every Monday, until the last Monday of Shravan, Bhadravo, Aso, and Kartak months falls on the sixteenth Monday.

On the 16th Monday, make laddoos (Indian Sweet) by mixing half a pound of wheat flour with half a pound of ghee and half a pound of jaggery. Make four parts of this sweet. Give one part of it to the temple inquirer, another part to the children at play, a third to the cowherd, and take one part yourself. If remains, fill it with the ants, and if remains, bury it in the ground. Celebrating Vrat in this way. If you do this fast of sixteen Mondays with faith, your body will become like Kanchan.

The leper Brahmin touched the Lord’s feet. Then he spoke about the elimination of the sin of the horse, Lord Shankara said: “This horse was Vaniya in the previous birth. He used to cheat people by using false measurements, and lent money to people and charged them with interest. If you ride on him, all his troubles will be removed.”

Then when the Brahmin spoke of the cow’s sin, Lord Shankara said: “This cow was a woman in her previous life. She was very angry. The lady even used to drop her babies while they are breastfeeding. She is now suffering the fruits of this sin. If you anoint me with milk from her udder to atone for her sin, then all her pain will be removed.”

Then the Brahmin told about the mango tree’s pliTohankara said: “He was very greedy in his previous birth. Although he had a lot of wealth, he was not charitable. In order to atone for his sin, there are piles of money buried under that mango, if you remove it and use that money in good deeds, then all his pain will be removed.”

Then the Brahmin told the crocodile’s pain, then Lord Shankar said: “This crocodile was a great scholar in his previous life, but he did not teach anyone the scriptures. Hence he is suffering like a crocodile in this life. If you put the white paper of me in his eyes, all his irritation will go away.” Then after knowing all the solutions to the sin of everyone who asked and take a bilipatra and walked away.

First of all, he came to the lake. A crocodile was sitting on the bank of the lake waiting for the Brahmin. The Brahmin placed Mahadevji’s placard on the crocodile’s eye, and immediately the inflammation in the crocodile’s body subsided.

From there the Brahmin proceeded. He came to the mango tree on the road and told him what Mahadevji had said. Then he took a spade and dug grass from under the mango tree and determined to use that wealth in the way of good deeds, plucked a mango from the mango tree and ate it and he belched out nectar.

From there the Brahmin proceeded. On the way, the cow was sitting waiting for the Brahmin. The Brahmin narrated what Mahadevji had said to the cow. After milking the cow, collecting its milk in a vessel, and anointing the name of Mahadevji on a stone, the cow’s pain was removed immediately. His calves came playing and started chasing the cow.

From there the Brahmin proceeded. The horse was standing on the road waiting for him. The Brahmin told him what Mahadevji had said. Riding on a horse, he said: “Now your sin is atoned for.”

In time, the month of Shravan arrived, so the Brahmin began a sixteen-day fast. Four months passed in no time. On the sixteenth Monday, the Brahmin celebrated the Vrat. Due to the Brahmin’s steadfast faith and devotion, his body became like Kanchan’s as before. His leprosy was completely cured.

Freed from the curse of Parvati, the Brahmin came to his village and saw a huge mandap built there. In it, the princes of the country were sitting dressed in ornaments and clothes. Tapodhana Brahmin asked someone and found out that ‘This is the swayamvar of our king’s daughter, so all the kings and princes have come.’

Tapodhana Brahmin went to a corner of that mandap and stood. The decorated elephant came to the Brahmin carrying a garland and put the garland around the neck of Tapodhan Brahmin. Seeing this, the king spoke: “Elephant forgets, misses.”

The king threw that Brahmin out of the mandap. The elephant was again held by the garland and turned into a swayamvar. The elephant, carrying the garland, went back to the Brahmin outside the mandap and put the garland around his neck. The entire Raj Sabha spoke: “God has foreseen it, so Let it happen.”

The king got his daughter married to that Brahmin. The king gave gold, silver, diamonds, rubies, pearl jewelry, silk jari suits, elephants, and horses as clothing. The Brahmin took the princess as his wife and brought him home. Brahmin’s mother feels joyful by seeing his son and daughter-in-law. She went to greet both of them with seeds from the jar, but the seeds turned into pearls. All this was the fruit of Mahadevji’s grace.

After some time the king died and this Brahmin became the king and his wife became the queen. The Brahmin repeated the fast of sixteen Mondays. The sixteenth Monday arrived at the end of Kartak month. The Brahmin king told his wife the secret of how to observe the sixteen Monday fast. Rani thought that my husband would be eating such a dried laddu….? She made thirty-two types of dishes and many other dishes.

The king sat down to eat and was angry at the queen after seeing the cooking happen. He finished the fast by praising Lord Shankar. Four grains of grain were taken and thrown in four directions and Slept on the hungry stomach. On the same night, Mahadevji appeared in the king’s dream and started saying: “O king! Your queen has broken your vow, so send her outside the country.” As soon as the morning came, the king sent the queen away and set her out of her kingdom.
